Often, exploring a website feels alot like exploring a maze, and while creating a website is, I expect, quite similar to creating a maze, there's no reason the viewer should get a sense of this. I spent a lot of time over the last 2 years working with Macromedia Flash trying to create immersive web spaces, using simple navigation and dynamic transitions to create informative environments rather than endless pages of text and labrynthal navigation menus which I feel the majority of the internet consists of. While I think flash is an endlessly valuable tool, this year I have been focussing on taking web design back to basics, and creating straight forward, visually solid html/php web spaces with low visual noise. I have been aiming to create the simplest possible method and display of navigation for exploring a site, with as few seperate elements as I could in terms of overall web design, and I feel I have succeeded in that it seems to be a popular choice for my clients. As with any kind of design, I feel it's important not to over-complicate your work, and it's frustratingly easy to create unnessecary visual noise that can often distract and confuse a viewer. Over the next year or so I will be returning to flash in an attempt to discover the line where the symbiosis of html and flash becomes a conflict, and then proceed to optimize the results into a dynamic, user friendly, fast-loading web space template. |
